It's funny that now the anti-smoking-inside law has been in effect for a while, everything seems to have calmed down and no-one even mentions it any more.

What did it bring us in the end, this 'contentious' law in a country of probably tens of millions of smokers? A reduction in smoking? Hah, you've gotta be kidding.

The legacy of this law seems to be two main things: huge groups of people milling and fuming away on the pavements outside any given building. And beautifully almost-enclosed terraces with the most wonderful heating systems you could possibly imagine. Practically like being inside, you might say.

Oh well, I've joked about this law before so I won't go on about it. Luckily, photographically and even aesthetically speaking, smoking is still around, and so the streets of Paris are still endowed with these rather jolly red and white Tabac signs, which is both the name of the substance and the place where you can procure your daily dose if you so desire.

A close cousin to this is the omnipresent flashing green pharmacy cross, which also isn't going anywhere soon, especially as long as the Tabac flags are flying proudly on every street corner.

OK, I admit it, cafés, bars and restaurants, and even work places are far pleasanter places to be these days for the non-smoker, but that's almost beside the point as far as a lot of French are concerned. The gallic shrug might come in handy here, if you believe in such things...

And why not...
