Here's Lookin' At You, Kid

This cheery chappy is actually a surprising sculpture you come across as you wander along the banks of the Seine in the so-called open-air sculpture park along the Quai Saint-Bernard.

What's surprising about it is that it's a bit tucked away, and as you approach it from the usual angle all you can see is this tall, cloaked figure but with no hint of a head of any sort.

It's just on rounding the last turn if the flowing robes (well, they would be if they weren't made of bronze or whatever) that this horrifying hallow'een-like head is revealed.

The sinister sculpture's called Melmoth and is by Reinout d'Haese who has an extremely interesting (I presume) Wikipedia page in, umm... Flemish?

Anyway, having placed this picture on my Paris If You Please facebook page as a quiz question and getting a total of zero right guesses, I guess it's not as well known as all that so I'm pleased to introduce it to you here.

Actually, there was one correct guess, who rightly asked if it was a self-portrait. Of course it is Marylin, as are all my Paris photos ;~S
