Time to get back to some mean moodiness - my street pictures have been far too light and cheerful recently and I've been getting thousands of complaints from my hard-core gothic friends, sooo...

...welcome to the other side of the city.

We're deep in the heart of the 17th, or was it the 8th, or the 9th... Oh, I can't remember, but this is obviously along one of those sinister railway cuttings which slash out from the not-quite-central Paris rail termini, such as Gare de Lyon, Montparnasse, Gare de l'Est and... this one here.

Almost as wonderful as the grimy gashes themselves are the businesses which gingerly cling to the overhanging walls. Desperate attempts to romanticise these rogues' dens with tenuous links to the golden age of the railway (Le Wagon Bleu, I ask you) only make them seem all the more desolate and sad. The kind of clientèle which tend to be attracted are those who, almost by definition, spend their time lurking around the edges of places such as this, which simply can't be a good sign.

Perhaps I'm doing them a disservice, but I personally wasn't enticed into 'The Blue Wagon' (we ain't talking Gare de Lyon's Train Bleu here), no matter how bright their lights, or how subliminally magnetic their ubiquitous Kronenbourg advertising panels. My gaze was more taken with what was going on below, which wasn't much as it happens, but you never know what you're going to see when the city turns itself inside out and puts its guts on show for our greater urban edification.

Gloomy enough? Move over Eeyore; Gormenghast, eat your heart out (Groan).
