~ Chefs-d'Oeuvre S.V.P. ~

Chefs-d'Oeuvre S.V.P., a photo by Paris Set Me Free on Flickr.
There's not much to say about the Bibliothèque Nationale de France which I haven't said already. Its surprising ugliness for modern architecture; the purety and extreme 'flatness' of its windows, as explained to me by an apologetic architect; the weird sunken forest you can't actually stroll through; the barren wilderness of its treacherous wooden slatted surroundings.

Whether it's a chef-d'oeuvre or not is highly debatable - it could have been of course, if someone, like Francois Mitterand for example, had had a bit more imagination.
What makes anything a chef-d'oeuvre is debatable in the end; it probably just comes down to enough people liking the thing, whatever that thing is. And whether anything like it had been done before. What makes this picture a 'chef-d'oeuvre is probably a combination of those, along with the artist's overall reputation, and the fact that we're all suckers for a pretty girl, well, a naked one, well, oh, you know what I mean. Boys will be boys.
This building's supposed to look like an open book. If you will. This photograph is no doubt intended to suggest sensuality, vulnerability, ecstacy and goodness knows what else. Does it? Well maybe it's a chef-d'oeuvre then. And besides, it says so on the poster, and who are we to argue?
And why not...
