I'm not exactly sure what the '29' refers to, but here we're looking at the edge of the Hôtel de Ville and something I'd never noticed before: the crystal clear marks of ammunition or shrapnel impact...

I understand that it's the city's policy to leave these in place lest we forget, as it were, and it's striking when you do come across them and realise that had we simply been living here a mere 70 years ago, we could have been feeling those projectiles whizzing past our ears.

The sombre streaking at the bottom of the shot is inexplicable, if pleasing, looking like some of the jet black spikes in the sobring memorial to the holocaust on the tip of Ile de la Cité.

Who the chappy up there is I don't know, no doubt some French luminary or other - feel free to fill me in if you're clever that way...
