Our first ever car, back in 1975 when I was a wee whipper-snapper of a bairn when we went to live in Australia for a year, was a Peugeot 404. Not quite as legendary as the one we see above, but it still brings the memories flooding back for me when I see one in the streets of Paris today, look!

The Citroën 2CV has migrated to another level altogether in the minds of the populace. Now it attracts a cult following, special rallies, dedicated garages and no doubt a feverish model collecting community if I know my French and other car fanatics.

I used to live around the corner from a specialist 2CV garage in Arcueil, just south of Paris, and the number and variety of these poor beasts in various states of disrepair scattered around the sidewalks outside brought a lump to the throat like a backfire to the exhaust.

We spotted the splendid specimen above on a reconnaissance mission in the 13th arrondissement quite appropriately next to the charming little Cité Florale, given the colours; it could easily transform itself into a bright red spring tulip with rich green leaves if it tried hard enough, I'm sure of it.

The way people do, as my buddy and I were shooting the vehicle to pieces, an elderly lady stopped and enthusiastically told us it belonged to an 18-year-old. Vive la jeunesse ! she triumphantly heralded, clenched fist aloft as she hobbled off, apparently very pleased with the fact that yesteryear's technology was still attracting fans today. I can't say I disagree.

And why not...
