A lonely leaf on a simple Seine parapet still has what it takes to attract my roving eye. Autumn's closing in again, and the streets are lined with shiny shivery slivers of last summer's exuberance.

Something as simple as this is a good chance to try and make a pleasing composition with the barest of raw materials, despite the failing flat light.

The sharpness of the ledge's edge contrasts nicely with the ragged leafy border. The leaf's pointing down and the stalk pointing up almost like some sort of rotting yellow apple-cum-strawberry, symbolic of the season's decay.

The clear spots on the bankside below are echoes of the main subject, and the tree trunk broodingly contemplates its paling progeniture. Another year bites the dust. Roll on 2014!
