I can't quite remember why I though this was worth taking a photo of, but I think it was because the guy was wearing an Eiffel Tower tee.

It also gives me a chance to rue the fact I didn't have the idea of starting Fat Tire Bike Tours which would doubtless have made me a multi-thousandaire, despite the despicable spelling...

But I'm not bitter - good luck to them, except when about twenty of them overtake me on the sidewa... I mean pavement as though they owned the trottoir.

Here they're on the banks of the Seine, which is getting ever more stroller-friendly, which can only be a good thing. As long as their bells are working.

Colours, as words, have long fascinated me. The almost overpowering orange of these traffic cones and the subtly subdued blue of the passing car are a case in point.

When I was young I went through two 'favourite colours' phases, almost like a premonition of what was to come.

The first combination I fell in love with was green and purple, two secondary colours which seemed to me to go splendidly together, despite the rather unorthodox pairing.

The second was blue and orange, and I've never fallen out of love with this particular alliance.

All that remains is to see how often nature, or urban architecture, throws up one or another of these curious couplings to titillate and regale my retinas.

The grim grey of the grimy street just makes the colours pop all the more. Thank goodness for colour!

What a glorious little parade of primary colours on a humble parking meter on a quiet Parisian street. Shame they didn't have the spunk to paint the 'Langue' button rainbow hued, but that's the linguist artist in me speaking!

And purple and orange indeed. Surely they could have squeezed them in somewhere. You'd have to be inside an urban street furniture architect's head to understand the finer points of the equation I suppose.

A lonely leaf on a simple Seine parapet still has what it takes to attract my roving eye. Autumn's closing in again, and the streets are lined with shiny shivery slivers of last summer's exuberance.

Something as simple as this is a good chance to try and make a pleasing composition with the barest of raw materials, despite the failing flat light.

The sharpness of the ledge's edge contrasts nicely with the ragged leafy border. The leaf's pointing down and the stalk pointing up almost like some sort of rotting yellow apple-cum-strawberry, symbolic of the season's decay.

The clear spots on the bankside below are echoes of the main subject, and the tree trunk broodingly contemplates its paling progeniture. Another year bites the dust. Roll on 2014!

If I'd allowed my lens to flutter to the right the Eiffel Tower would have crowded into the frame. As it was my gaze remained focused on this finely feathered friend, taking some time out to admire the Seine. Not everyone's a fan of the crows, but I like the slightly sinister demeanour of these silent sentinels.

I'm always pleased to record echoes and repetitions in my pictures. Here we have a picture of Eiffel surmounted by the tower itself. And the phrase 'first floor' appears four times, no less, in one form or another. I didn't actually get around to reading why they are in fact renovating the thing but I understand it's something to do with respecting new environmental norms, whatever they may be.

I remember reading somewhere that the icon was actually slowly but surely sinking under the immense weight of all that iron which, from the point of view of today's technical prowess, is now totally unnecessary to support the structure.

So, they were going to chop bits off, hidden from sight, to lighten the burden. Maybe that's what they're doing. Or just installing some more fast food restaurants to bleed the tourists of a bit more dosh. Bon appétit !

This sombre image conceals a secret; it's a fleeting reflection in a train window which appeared suddenly as we entered a short tunnel when I was actually expecting to take a picture of the racing landscape.

So we're not really looking at what we seem to be looking at at all. Reflections of reality. That creep up on you when you're not expecting them. Just like life.
