I tried out a new technique on this one and think it's come out quite well.

At the base of the sculpture is written 'A AVGVSTE COMTE' but I don't know if that's the subject or the author.

Anyway, it's in the square in front of the Sorbonne and must have seen countless studenty happenings over the years. I'm surprised it's in such good condition.

The technique I was trying out was a combination of over saturation, over contrast, over exposure and a slow shutter speed. WYSIWIG: What you see is what I got. I like the feel it gives.

I'm not a religious man, yet religion gives me as much pain as it does pleasure in trying to fathom the strange beliefs of its followers.

Whatever, there's no denying its influence, and nowhere more so than in the city of Paris, at least historically.

When I walked past this particular larger-than-life portrait and cross a woman was practically prostrate before it, arms outstretched in some sort of trance. It was impressive and always makes me wonder what they have that I haven't.

I generally end up concluding that they can keep it but it's though-provoking nevertheless.

I wrote a poem once called Tree Light Bench which I've just found by Googling 'Tree Light Bench poem Sab Will', which is nice. You can find it here just in case you're interested.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of benches, for some reason, sat on or otherwise.

Sat on they seem useful and integral. Seaterless and they just scream out 'gimmie a big ass' or something like that! Melancholy. Especially with the autumn leaves and rain gracing them. Jardin de Luxembourg again, just for your notes...

Thought I'd go really arty on this one, so here it is! The Jardin de Luxembourg in all it's bizarrely altered glory. You can see the Senate in the background.

This particular garden has various characteristics, but perhaps the most prominent is the ability to always surprise. You can get classic shots like Cartier-Bresson and Doisneau did. You can pay homage to the sculptures scattered around the place. Or even just immortalise a pot of flowers like I've done.

And then there's the unexpected artistic installations. You never know what to expect. Just the way I like it.

I'm always pleased to visit a Parisian church, on heaps of different levels.

The first is that, despite not believing in Da Lord or Jesus or all the rest, there is an undeniable peace and serenity to be found within the 'House of God'.

The second is that there is some remarkable artwork on display, not to mention the impressive architecture and sheer grandeur of the thing.

The third is that you can find a sort of microcosm of humanity; on this particular day respectful tourists doing a tour were rubbing shoulders with snoring drunks in the pews and pious believers, arms outstretched, in some sort of ecstasy in front of some sort of representation of their faith.

And then there's me. A sort of extraterrestrial not quite fitting into any of the above categories, but closer to some than to others.

In any case I (paid for and) lit a candle just to keep the tradition going a little longer and took this snap of it you can see above.

Of course I enhanced reality as it looks so much nicer here than in the original vision as seen with the naked eye. My candle's the little one second from the left. So now I've left some sort of mark.

Welcome to the Arab Institute's UFO - the wildest recent creation in the city and, to be frank, not particularly Arabic looking, but then again, maybe that's the point.

To be honest, I haven't been inside - maybe it's like a traditional souk from the interior - I'll report back in due course.

But as it is it's like the funkiest flying saucer you ever did see, plonked down on the left bank just next to the Middle Eastern cultural centre. At night it's bathed in eerie blue.

I don't know what it is about public parks, or maybe sunny Sunday afternoon strollers, but it seems, judging by the number of public weighing machines scattered around the place, that people have a sudden urge to know the damage.

And for only 20 centimes you can do just that. If it's working, which one of them wasn't. It seems a curious piece of park furniture given they could have put a coffee machine or an internet terminal or even another public toilet, which never goes amiss.

I haven't tried them out, personally, nor have I ever seen anyone doing so. But there they are, these Wallace-green edifices from another era when people, well, seemed to be concerned about that sort of thing.
